The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: Endless Eight Discussion

As I began watching The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, an anime series that is pretty damn hilarious, has great characters, and has some crazy sci-fi in it. I had no idea what I was to expect later on. As I have finally finished the 8 episodes titled “The Endless Eight,” which are virtually identical due to time looping over and over again except for small changes in dialogue, clothing, hair styles, etc, I may have gone slightly insane because I actually sat through them all like no sane person would. Oddly, I wasn’t as annoyed by them as I thought I would be. Rather, I loved what they were doing with this. To me, these 8 episodes are masterful in the sense of social experimentation, trolling, and making people (at least somewhat) feel like Yuki Nagato in the series, the only one who knows that time is constantly repeating and has over 15,000 times.

When these episodes came out, people were pissed off. Fans got rid of their things related to Haruhi Suzumiya. It didn’t go over well except for a select few who didn’t mind it. I include myself in this group even though I started watching the series 4 years after these episodes have come out. Do I think it was the smartest idea to do it for eight episodes? No, probably not. It’s a bit too long. But, the fact that they made people get angry and tired of it shows that the job of it was done correctly. They wanted people to get mad. They wanted people to feel tired of this shit already like Yuki. If anything, art is meant to evoke emotions and it was successfully achieved with these episodes in the craziest way.

It was risky and ambition and that’s what I like about it the most. Most artists wouldn’t even try to do something as crazy as this. Think about it. This aired week after week in Japan and obviously, people downloaded fan subs and the such and watched it as well. Imagine, week after week, waiting for episodes, and getting this. It would be agonizing. And that’s what they wanted. Overall, I don’t think it was awful and I enjoyed it way more than I should have. For some reason, watching 8 episodes of nearly identical material didn’t bother me as much as it should have. I actually somewhat enjoyed it and loved what they were going for. In general, I’m excited to actually go and watch normal episodes again and finish the last few episodes of the series now. Regardless, I highly recommend this anime if you’ve never watched it (and don’t worry you only need to really watch the first and the last episodes of the Endless Eight if you want to).
